European legislation

EU regulations are binding to the Member Statesand apply equally to all Member States. EU regulationsare not rewritten into national laws.

EU directives must be harmonized into the national laws of Member States. The directives lay down what minimum rules apply for the Member States, although each country may establish a higher level of protection in its national law.

  • Council Directive 85/577/EEC of 20 December 1985 to protect the consumer in respect of contracts negotiated away from business premises
  • Council Directive 93/13/EEC of 5 April 1993 on unfair terms in consumer contracts
